Conservation begins with context.

Not every bee is a honey bee. Most bee species are wild, many live alone, and each has its own relationship with plants, soil, seasons, and climate. Protecting bee diversity means protecting the complete places bees need to feed, nest, reproduce, and survive.

Most bees do not live in hives.

Wild bees include bumble bees, mining bees, mason bees, leafcutter bees, sweat bees, carpenter bees, and thousands more. Their conservation needs can be very different from those of managed honey bees.

A species can hold different statuses at global, national, and local scales, so each assessment is kept separate and never merged into a single universal score.

Global or regional extinction-risk assessment

The IUCN Red List places a species in one extinction-risk category for a defined assessment scope and date.

Threats are species-specific and place-specific.

Bee declines rarely have one universal cause. Pressures interact differently across species, habitats, and regions, and some species have documented declines while many others simply lack adequate trend data.

Good intentions need good information

Saving bees means installing a honey bee hive.

Reality: A managed hive is not a substitute for protecting local wild species or restoring habitat.

Any wildflower mix will help.

Reality: Generic mixes can contain plants poorly suited to the region or potentially invasive there. Prioritise verified, regionally appropriate plants.

A bee hotel can be installed and forgotten.

Reality: Poorly designed or unmaintained nesting structures can accumulate moisture, parasites, and pathogens. Natural nesting habitat is often the best starting point.

Sugar water is a long-term food source for wild bees.

Reality: Focus on diverse flowering plants and habitat unless a qualified local authority provides situation-specific emergency guidance.

No records means no bees.

Reality: It may mean the area has not been adequately surveyed or reported.

Data Deficient means the species is safe.

Reality: It means available information is insufficient to determine extinction risk.

Please do not

  • Purchase or release bees into the wild as a conservation activity.
  • Disturb or excavate active nests.
  • Move occupied nests without qualified local guidance.
  • Collect specimens without any required permission.
  • Publish exact locations of sensitive species and nests.

Photograph a bee, record where and when you saw it, and tell us which flower it visited. Community observations can reveal where more research is needed and help people notice the diversity around them.

A sighting is evidence that a bee was observed at a place and time. It is not proof of abundance, stability, or decline. Identifications suggested automatically are labelled “suggested identification” and are never presented as verified, and coordinates for sensitive species and private locations are generalised.

Methodology and sources

We show what a record says, who published it, which geography it covers, and when it was assessed. Where a data source is not yet connected, we say so instead of filling the gap with an estimate.

  • Population abundance from raw sighting totals.
  • Trends from opportunistic observations alone.
  • Native status from a single occurrence point.
  • Extinction risk from rarity on this platform.
  • Species absence from missing records.
  • Ecological health from one combined score.
